Examples of current projects and activities:

    Aeronautical communications

§         L-DACS: Development, refinement, specification and prototyping of the data communication link for future worldwide air traffic management

§         EMMA: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development of an airport data link; channel measurement campaign and channel modelling

§         FACTS: DLR funded: Development of a simulator which allows to realistically model aircraft routes over Europe

§         ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation): Standardisation of radio systems for future aeronautical communications – advisor of DFS (Deutsche Flugsicherung) in the ACP (Aeronautical Communications Panel) of ICAO

 

    Mobile radio communications

§         Galileo ADAP2000: DLR funded: Development of positioning techniques via mobile radio signals; measurement campaigns, channel modelling

§         WHERE: EU funded; DLR as prime: The main objective of WHERE is to combine wireless communications and navigation for the benefit of future mobile radio systems. The impact will be manifold, such as real time localization knowledge in B3G/4G systems which increase the cellular capacity

§         GRAMMAR: EU (GSA) funded; DLR as prime: Development of hybrid mobile radio and GNSS based positioning techniques; simulations and prototyping

 

    Navigation, services and transportation

§         Galileo ADAP3000: DLR funded: Development and prototyping of indoor positioning techniques based on a multi-sensor approach (GNSS, INS, Compass, altimeter, maps, movement models, RF ID)

§         Anastasia: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development and demonstration of new communication and navigation techniques; measurement campaign on DME interference

§         RCAS: DLR funded: Development and prototyping of a railway collision avoidance system; concept development and PHY and MAC layer design

§         Car2Car Communications: DLR and EU funded via projects iTetris and preDrive: Development and prototyping of car-to-car applications, information management and sensor fusion

§         TEWS: Development of a Tsunami Early Warning System: KN-FS is responsible for the communications links

§         LIMES: Development and prototyping of context-aware services for disaster relief workers

§         PERSIST: European Project: Development of a framework which enables context-aware services

§         UV Check: Development and operation of a location-based SMS service which provides the time it takes to get a sunburn depending on UV concentration, clouds, location and skin type

 


Standards and methods the Division has contributed to:

o        DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting): Design of overall system (multicarrier technique, framing) and of hierarchical modulation

o        Video-Coding for MPEG-4: Error resilient video coding

o        UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System): Concept proposed for a 3rd generation mobile radio system within the framework of EU-project CoDiT

o        Mode 3 and Mode 4 VHF communications: Modification of proposals: Modulation, pulse shaping, synchronisation, TDMA frame structure

o        ESA Signal Design Study: Pre-Design of navigation signal for Galileo

o        B-VHF: European Project (STREP) in the framework of FP6: Development and demonstration of a OFDM-based overlay system for broadband communications for flight guidance in the VHF-band

o        Anastasia: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development and demonstration of new communication and navigation techniques

o        EMMA: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development of an A-SMGCS (advanced surface movement, guidance and control system) and integration into the overall ATM (air traffic management) system

o        TakeOFDM: DFG funded: Development of new algorithms for OFDM overlay systems

o        WINNER: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development of a beyond 3G ubiquitous radio system concept based on a common radio interface technology fulfilling evolved user requirements in particular for wide area and short range communication scenrios

o        PLUTO: European Project (STREP) in the framework of FP6: Phsyical Layer DVB Transmission Optimisation. Development and prototyping of transmission diversity and repeater techniques to improve the reception of DAB and DVB-T.

o        4MORE: European Project (STREP) in the framework of FP6: Development and prototyping of a low power system on chip solution for multi-antenna MC-CDMA mobile terminals based on joint optimisation of layer 1 and layer 2 functions

o        GREAT: European Project in the framework of GJU: Development of hybrid positioning algorithms for mass market applications.

o        DAIDALOS: European Project (IP) in the framework of FP6: Development of an architecture which integrates a broad range of heterogeneous network and navigation technologies in a flexible and scaleable manner to ensure interworking between different networks

o        Heywow: HTO (High Tech Offensive Bayern)-Project: Development and demonstration of location-based services based on Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS

o        GalileoNav: DLR-Project on Galileo: Propagation measurement campaign, channel modelling, receiver design, system simulation (NavSim)

o        COST 280 "Propagation Impairment Mitigation for Millimetre Wave Radio Systems"

o        Project Broadband Air Interface for 4G Mobile Radio Systems, Phase 2 (DoCoMo Eurolabs Munich): Design and analysis of an OFDM based air interface for future broadband mobile radio systems with data rates up to 100 Mbit/s. The system design has its focus on the physical layer. The underlying multiple access scheme is an adaptive MC-CDMA realization

o        ESA-Study "Navigation Signal Measurement Campaign for Critical Environments": Propagation measurement campaign for the future European satellite navigation system

o        Projects dTTb (digital terrestrial television broadcasting), HDTVT (hierarchical digital television transmission) and DVBird (digital video broadcasting integrated receiver and decoder): Development of digital terrestrial television
